HBLN Member Benefits
Your annual HBLN membership enables you to free access at the Remida Centre in Perth. Remida is a recycling/reuse centre that collects many different materials from a range of commercial and local industries for use in a myriad of creative and educational projects, limited only by your imagination.
Located at 1Prospect Place West Perth it is open:
Tuesday's 2.00-6.00pm
Thursday's 2.00 - 5.00pm
Saturdays 1.00-4.00pThe resources at REmida vary from day to day so it's worth going back more than once in a while. Materials can be utilised in anything from art, to science, to home renovation as my bathroom mirror and book case will testify too. Many of the resources at Remida would otherwise end up as landfill so not only is it a great way to find free material's to build the Temple of Apollo for that LOTE lesson in Greek, or tubing for a homemade skeleton for biology, but it also helps the environment and your budget at the same time.
So make sure you get the most out of your HBLN subscription and take a trip to REmida and see what you can find.
PS don't forget to take your HBLN members card as proof of id.
Progress Report
Well it occurs to me that I’ve been so busy between weddings, house renovations, babies to be and sons leaving for the Army not to mention preparing for the AGM this coming Tuesday ,that it’s been a while since I filled you in on what’s happening here at conference central. We're kind of in the thick of things here too, speakers are organised, delegate packs are being made up and trade fair delegates are contacted, could explain why my children have taken to emailing me to make an appointment.
For weeks now the committee has been ringing numbers, sending emails, and posting letters as we head into the half way mark for our July conference. Next step will be to post the program on line on our soon to be new look website which we plan to launch shortly. Our new web man Neil has been busy constructing a site which will not only be more user friendly, but will enable us to bring you a host of new services in the near future so keep an eye out for it.
However back to the conference, the theme of which is “learning for Life” for all the family has seen as put together a conference this year that focuses on providing parents with information and skills in a range of areas, sort of PD for home based parents.
With workshops on everything from the world of cyberspace to indigenous affairs, and for something new there will be a range of workshops where parents and teenagers can learn alongside each other. We have sourced speakers from all walks of life, from familiar faces like Beverley Paine, to professionals in specific fields such as Julia Ferguson from Scitech on through to parents like my hubby Tom who’s agreed to talk about his journey as a home based dad. The Department of Education will also be presenting up-to-date information on the national curriculum which can be viewed on line at www.acara.edu.au.
If you’re a fan of the ABC’s Q&A, which I am, then you’ll enjoy our opening program, while our Trade Fair coordinators are going all out to bring you a diverse range of companies to examine.
Well the sun is up and we’re meeting soon to work on more of the conference, so it’s time to put the Danish in the oven, perk the coffee, and feed the ducks and hens before the troops arrive.
See you in July
Learning For Life
We have secured a further two wonderful speakers for the conference in July from ECU.
Nardia Bordas from the Faculty of Computing, Health and Science and Barbara Combes from the School of Computer & Security Science. We hope to have a list of people, lectures and workshops up on the web by the end of March.
However for the present we are working on Barbara presenting a workshop on cyber safety and ethics in the modern world of social networking and modern technologies, which will bring parents and young people alike up-to-date with the issues they need to be thinking about in our age of on line computing and networking. While Nadia’s area of passion is the world of natural sciences, Chemistry, Biology and environmental sciences.
We are also in contact with people from Scitech at present and are hoping to have some exciting news on this front shortly too. In the mean time we would like to source people who might be able to equip parents with new info and ideas for LOTE, if you know of someone who fits the bill drop me a line.
I am not sure what is exciting me more the way the conference is shaping up or my sons wedding this weekend…..I know only a home based mum could make such a statement
…..
I am pretty sure its my sons
wedding
Yeah Happy Birthday to Us!!!
Well here we are in 2010 our 20th year of Home Based Learning in Western Australian as an organisation, and while you might have thought we had all disappeared here at HBLN central, the ladies on committee and our team of volunteers have all been hard at work since the middle of the month continuing preparations for our July Conference and Trade Fair.
After much hunting our wonderful Librarian Frith found a fantastic venue for the event, Penrhos College in Como, while behind the scenes our sub- committees are hard at work securing guest speakers for the conference, and booking companies for the trade fair. In the coming days we will post the workshops on line for parents to take a sneak peak at what lies ahead.
Exciting news on the Trade front, this year will see three of Perth’s Universities present information to parents, as well as groups that provide on line support for home based parents. Do you know of a company you would like to see at the trade fair? Then drop us a line and we will see what we can do.![]()
Or if you would like to volunteer to join a group or volunteer on the day then send an email to the events co-ordinator with your details and preferences and we will welcome you with open arms and a small list of jobs that need doing ...no really it won’t take you long.
Currently I am in the midst of another countdown... only five sleeps to go until I have a married son and a second daughter. I am not sure what is keeping me awake more at nights planning how to be a great mother in law or helping create a successful conference along with the other ladies on the committee........ I’ll let you know once both are over.... in the interim .....
Happy Birthday to all our HBLN’ers, may this be your best year of home based learning yet.
Blogging A Conference
Day 1
Home based education has never been dull for us, if anything the last few years have been some of the most rewarding, stretching, frustrating, fascinating, exhausting and hilarious I have experienced, however since joining the HBLN committee life in our home has gone into warp drive. I have talked to more people from all walks of life than ever before, some I have met on the net and then low and behold they are sat on my back veranda talking about their journey, while we drink coffee and watch ducks, children, cats, chickens and the occasional rabbit chase each other around the orchard. Many are from Champion where Gabrielle and Kirsten work so tirelessly on behalf of others, and still more by phone that are starting out and feel as though they have just leapt off a cliff and think they might have forgotten to put on their parachute. However this week has been a biggie not least of which has been the news that there’s going to be a wedding shortly with my oldest getting married to his beautiful girlfriend before he joins the army next February. Decisions…… Decisions…..Do I start dieting so I fit into something I want to be seen wearing for generations to come in the family album, or do I just photo shop and airbrush the snaps after they are taken and instead concentrate on finding the perfect present? Then there was the meeting Jenni our valiant secretary and I had with David Axlworthy from the Department of Education to discuss ways of making life easier for all of us who choose home education. The hardest part of which was our trying to get in and out of the toilet, we might need to brush up on our linguistic decoding. And then when I thought this week was nearly over an email arrived from a fellow HBLN member with a wealth of experience offering to help craft the conference of all conferences for us next year and my excitement meter raced up into the red and dinner was suddenly a buffet of left over’s from the depths of my fridge while my imagination raced with possibilities. So in a bid to share the fun and reap the benefits of everyone’s experience we are going to be blog our way through the whole process from start to finish and hopefully at the end of it all we will have a template for future committees of what works and what doesn’t and also a record of where the last nine months went when we realise that the end of the year is approaching and we seem to have missed it. In the mean time I hope you will log on and feed us your thoughts and ideas, to kick things off we need a theme for the conference….anyone got any ideas out there????? In the mean time I am going to brush up on my photo shop skills |
Day 9
Day nine of things to be considered when building a conference I have spent a good part of the morning on the phone to the various University's in Perth checking that the information I have on how home based learners gain entry into their institutions is up to date for the Getting Started Seminar on the 30th of this month, and it occurred to me while I was on the phone that I could test the waters re the conference............ Good news is Murdoch, Curtin and my particular favourite ECU have all said "Love to come along and talk to parents" so for all of you out there who have started to wonder about this part of your child’s life wonder no more In the mean time work has begun, thank you to Jane, Kendal and Fiona who have all put their hands up to work on sub committee's for various area's and also to my hubby Tom who is going to provide the sound equipment and the occasional neck massage, though I haven't mentioned that part yet . Our wonderful web master Sara has put on her thinking cap and is looking at ways and means of enabling people to possibly sign up for workshops directly via the web site, and in the mean time fantastic people like Julie, John, Jane and Saani are saying "yes we are happy to run a workshop". Low and behold as I type John has sent in an email saying what about something along the lines of how to balance the needs of IQ and EQ ...... Put my name down for that workshop. Some of the suggestions for workshops from parents so far are: How do I organise an event? Avoiding burn out How does my child get to uni? Can a novice make Science and History electrifying? Goal setting for the nervous beginner? So for all of those going to Adventure World on Friday, committee members will be present so seek us out and tell us your ideas of what you want, what you need...... oh and what you might be able to contribute.....and if your looking for me I’ll be on the Go- Karts going round and round and round……. ![]() |
